US: Mercedes recall to fix steering glitch

Mercedes US/UK was recalling more than 100,000 Mercedes-Benz vehicles in the United States and the United Kingdom to prevent a loss of power steering fluid. The NHTSA said in a posting to its website Monday that the recall involved Mercedes-Benz C-Class vehicles from the 2010 model year and Mercedes-Benz E-Class vehicles from the 2010-2011 model years. The recall involves vehicles produced between June 2009 and late February 2010. A problem with the steering system's pump could lead to a loss of fluid and "owners may not have sufficient control of the vehicle in areas, such as parking lots, where maximum power steering is required, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash," the NHTSA said on its website. The Daimler spokesman stressed that drivers retained control of the car even in the event of a power steering failure. Mercedes planned to fix the problem in 2010 and 2011 models this month by re-tightening a faulty ...

Motorist reverses Mercedes through a brick wall on the seventh floor of a multi-storey car park

The rear of a white Mercedes hung out from the seventh floor of a downtown Tulsa parking garage after the driver backed through the garage wall. Ralph Hudson says his foot got stuck between his Mercedes' brake and gas pedal as he was backing up in a towering parking garage in downtown Tulsa on Wednesday. The car's rear wheels stopped on the ledge created by the hole in the wall and officials were able to drive the car safely back into the garage. No injuries were reported. Police officer Jason Willingham says Hudson was not ticketed over the incident. video platform video management video solutions video player No related posts.

Mercedes is trying the external airbag

In 1980, Mercedes-Benz introduced the airbag in Germany as an option on its high-end S-Class (W126). In the Mercedes system, the sensors would automatically pre-tension the seat belts to reduce occupant's motion on impact (now a common feature), and then deploy the airbag on impact. Today, Mercedes wants to introduce an external airbag. Not to turn the car into a massive cushion and protect pedestrians, as you might guess, but to be deployed beneath the car as a sort of anchor to slow the car when a collision is inevitable. The bag inflates below the car, lifting the vehicle slightly and pushing a rubber and steel plate against the road. The result is up to 2G deceleration, enough to greatly reduce the force of impact. The bag also lifts the front end as much as 3 inches. It's just one of many proposed safety features in Mercedes' new ESF 2009 engineering car. Others ...
